Google's API-a new tool to move social networks
by Tatiana Hadarova

SigEx Telecom and its clients might in the fututre profit from a new toll, which was last Friday released by Google. It is called Social Graph API (application programming interface), which suppose to be an easier way for users to link applications to their connections between sites. By providing this new "service" Google is trying to boost the potential of a user' s network and of developers' applications, which might possibly diminish the value of websites. But what is exactly API all about? An application programming interface is "a source code interface that an operating system or library provides to support requests for services to be made of it by computer programs." This tool is very similar to Advanced programming interface, and "in the original term the concept is meant to represent any well defined interface between two separate programs." The API release and publishing policies are not always designated to be for public. For example SONY used to protect their API and make its PlayStation2 available only to its licensed developers. With this regulation SONY could control who wrote PlayStation2 games, which can have quality benefits. Other companies, like Microsoft make their API freely available. The main aim of introducing API by Google is to allow users to spend less time rebuilding their network for a new web site or application because it "makes information about the public connections between people on the Web easily available and useful," Google software engineer Brad Fitzpatrick said. Jeremiah Owyang, an analyst for industry research firm Forrester sees in Google API a great potential. In a future Web "users will move from one community to another," and according to him it will mean that an individual can aggregate a network in one location, and then readily move it as he or she travels to other social environments.
