by Zuzana Moravcova

Telecommunications equipment manufacturers are quickly moving to implement Linux operating system in mission critical applications. At Monday's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the LiMo Foundation unveiled the first of their Linux-based mobile handsets. Kiyohito Nagata of NTT DoCoMo, chairperson of the LiMo Foundation, said that an embrace of the Linux software will lead to lower device development costs and quicker time-to-market. The progress that Linux is making in the telecom space is marked by more and more telecommunication companies."The tide has already turned in the telecommunications market. Recent announcements from a number of telecommunications companies demonstrate the increasing adoption of Linux to reduce costs and enable a higher level of flexibility in telecommunications devices," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of Open Source Development Labs. What's important to telecom customers is that they get the performance they need from a vendor that they trust, thinks Scott Crenshaw, senior director of product management and marketing at Red Hat, the Linux leader. "There are no barriers to pervasive enterprise Linux adoption in telecom today," he said.SigEx Telecom has already done this innovative step, to develop flexible, cost-effective offerings, and to quickly advantage of Linux Telecom platform. At SigEx Telecom, there are Linux developers doing advanced research projects, funded by SigEx Ventures.
